My approach:

I am often asked what theory, orientation or brand of therapy I use in working with people. The clearest answer I have is, “my own.” In  the professional jargon this is often called ‘eclectic,’ a combination of approaches. My graduate training was in both Psychodynamic therapy (how our feelings, thoughts, actions are influenced--often out of our usual awareness--by our past experiences and development) and Humanistic therapy (how we all strive--or feel blocked-- moment by moment to experience our lives, relationships and purpose as fully as possible).  Now, after working for almost thirty years now with so many people struggling with so many difficulties, attending hundreds of hours of advanced continuing education seminars, reading and reviewing so many texts and articles searching out some particular bit of information or knowledge, as well as living my own life, what I have to offer is a synthesis of these experiences. How I might approach working with you is based on your unique development, circumstances and personhood; quite often our approach changes as you respond or your situation evolves.

Typical issues:

People seek therapy with me for a variety of reasons but always because in some way some how there is something difficult, frustrating, troubling or painful in their life that they haven’t yet been able to figure out how to make different in a way that lasts over time.

A few examples--by no means a complete list--would include

~~ often feeling sad, down, disillusioned or not very effective somehow

~~not thinking that you make very good decisions or choices with relationships

~~feeling anxious or fearful, worried about something specific or your future, maybe even so much it interferes with your sleep, eating, activities or health

~~dissatisfaction with your sex life

~~problems resolving extremely difficult past experience such as sexual abuse or assault, a crime, a traumatic accident or exposure to extreme stress situations such as Military duty

~~problems with an important relationship such as between a couple, within your family, your friends, or perhaps at work

~~dealing with the loss of an important relationship, maybe a romance ending, a divorce, death, a career ending or something important to you not continuing on

~~problems around alcohol or other drugs, used by yourself or others

~~compulsive habits or thoughts you can’t seem to control

~~feeling disappointed, frustrated or stuck in general or in some particular part of life

~~not liking that person you see in the mirror very much

~~wondering if you might improve your life by understanding yourself better

If you’re wondering about something not mentioned in this short list, or if I might be a good match, I’d encourage you to call and ask. Perhaps if I don’t work with your particular concern I might be able to help you with resources.
